Working visit to Hanoi Print

On April 21st Kirsan Ilyumzhinov continued his working visit to Vietnam. Having arrived in the Vietnamese capital, he had meetings at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Ministry of Education and Training and at the Chancellery of the Government.

Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Ms. Dang Thi Bich Lien greatly appreciated the level of cooperation between FIDE and Vietnam, emphasizing that, nevertheless, it has the potential for further development.

In turn, FIDE President highlighted the progress of the Vietnamese chess players on the international arena: "There are not so many kinds of sport in Vietnam, where gold medals have been won at the world championships, and in chess Le Quang Liem became a champion in the World Blitz Championship last year in Khanty-Mansiysk. Women's team has become a very formidable opponent for all teams at the World Chess Olympiads. Moreover, there is a noticeable progress in children's zone, continental and world championships. This indicates a serious work carried out by the Vietnam Chess Federation." In addition, questions of methodological assistance, organizing of seminars, training sessions, study referrals of students to sport universities with chess specialization, expansion of experience of implementation of CIS programme. FIDE President stressed that Vietnam could become a regional leader in chess developing when opens a Chess Academy.

During the meeting with the Deputy Minister of Education and Training, Mr. Nguyen Vinh Hien specific issues of introducing chess in schools curriculum were in question.

FIDE President shared positive experiences of other countries, including the Vietnamese province of Binh Duong. It was agreed to prepare a draft agreement on cooperation between FIDE, Ministry of Education and Training and Chess Federation of Vietnam.

It turned out that the head of Department on work with students is a sport university graduate, a former board member of the Chess Federation and the issue of chess in schools programme is close and clear to him.

At the meeting with the Minister, the Head of the Chancellery of the Government in Vietnam, Mr. Nguyen Van Nen the results of the working visit of FIDE President were discussed.
