International chess festival MGSU Rector’s Cup “Our Heritage”
The decision to hold the international chess festival in the biggest University of Construction in Russia was made at the meeting of Rector of Moscow State University of Civil Engineering (MGSU) Mr. Valery Telichenko, FIDE President Mr. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and the first Vice President of Moscow Chess Federation Mr. Kim Nikita. The meeting took place in Moscow State University of Civil Engineering (MGSU) on June 6th.
The tournament will be held in the second part of November 2012 under the auspices of FIDE and the patronage of “Our Heritage” Fund. The prize fund will be not less than 1 mln roubles. The competition will be available for chess amateurs of all ages and skills as well as for the professional chess players. It is planned to organize the Rector’s Cup annually. The organizers expect to enlist the support from the Russian Chess Federation and Moscow Government and particularly from Moscow Sports Committee.
As Mr. Telichenko noted, MGSU has all necessary capabilities to organize world class tournaments. Since 2011 there is a Chess Department in MGSU where nearly 200 students study.
President Ilyumzhinov promised to support the festival from FIDE’s side and include the event in FIDE Tournaments Calendar. He expressed the confidence that MGSU Rector’s Cup will attract the strongest chess players within the next few years in Moscow. Mr. Nikita Kim noticed that since the Moscow Chess federation has a new leadership the chess life of the capital has reached a new level. “President of Moscow Chess Federation Mr. Vladimir Palikhata set a goal to make Moscow the main chess spot on the map. He believes that in the nearest future this festival will be the biggest in the world. Everything depends on us now.”
