Visit of FIDE President to Lithuania |

On December the 3rd FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov arrived to Lithuania with an official visit. The working meeting the with General Secretary of the National Olympic Committee of Lithuania Vytautas Zubernis took place in the airport of Vilnius. Later in the town hall of the capital city Kirsan Ilyumzhinov had a conversation with the Mayor of Vilnius, Arturas Zuokas . FIDE President described the main activities of FIDE and Mr. Zuokas showed interest in Chess in Schools project as well as building of the Chess Center. The Mayor is going to find appropriate location and study the existing architect plans.
Chess tournament and ceremonial meeting dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the Lithuanian Chess Federation took place the same day in Kaunas. GM Butnorius, Algimantas has made a speech and presented some interesting historical facts about participation of chess as sport in the program of the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936, the chess part of the Olympiad was held in Munich. FIDE President congratulated chess community of the Lithuania with jubilee and noted that names of Vladas Mikenas. Viktorija Cmilyte are widely known not only in the chess world but also serve as visit card and honor of this Baltic country.
During the session FIDE President and President of the Chess federation of Lithuania Jonas Viesulas signed protocol of intentions on collaboration between FIDE, Ministry of Science and Education and Chess Federation of Lithuania. The Minister Gintaras Steponavicius has signed this document earlier in Vilnius. Mayors of Kaunas and Siauliai Andrius Kupcinskas and Justinas Sartauskas
also took part in the meeting. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and Jonas Viesulas were awarded with diplomas and envelopes of various activists of the chess movement of Lithuania.
