On Thursday, before the Opening Ceremony of the Candidates Matches, another no less grandiose ceremony was held in Kazan. The ceremony of placing a base stone for the future World Chess Academy where chess players will have a chance to train and improve their chess skills, seminars will be held for Arbiters and Trainers and many large events will be held including the Chess tournament as a part of 2013 Summer Universiade. Kazan intends to apply to hold the World Chess Olympiad in 2016 as well.
Kazan is considered to be a sports capital of Russia - a city with a rich chess tradition. The Government of the Republic of Tatarstan took great interest in implementing this facility and offered the land in the historic center of the city.
The 25 floor Chess Academy will have the opportunity to hold tournaments with the most advanced internet technologies, allowing players to compete even when they are in different places around the world. In order to comfortably accommodate participants during the tournaments, it was decided to combine the Academy with a world-class hotel complex. Future visitors to the Academy will also have a chance to visit the fitness center in this complex.
FIDE President, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, placed the base stone of the future Academy in the presence of the first President of Republic of Tatarstan, Senior Advisor to FIDE President Mintimer Shaimiev, the Mayor of Kazan city Ilsur Metshin and many other official guests.
From 3 to 27 May 2011 Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, will play host to the participants of the Candidates Matches 2011.
