On behalf of the International Chess Federation, FIDE Presidential Board, people of the Republic of Kalmykia and me personally I would like to express deep condolences upon the death of 7th World Chess Champion, Champion of the World Chess Olympiads, the Champion of the USSR, Honoured Master of Sports of the USSR Vasily Vasilyevich Smyslov.
Great chess theoretician and author of the composite sketches and problems - he made a great contribution to the popularization of the game. Vasily Smyslov is considered as one of the strongest and the most interesting players in the history of world chess.
The entire sports world and the huge army of admirers of Vasily Smyslov's talent mourn with us. He will always remain in our minds and the hearts as embodiment and symbol of the highest style, practical wisdom, great talent, brilliant professionalism and deep honesty. In any situation in life he has maintained sobriety of mind and the ability to make the right moves.
I grieve with the family.
