FIDE President, Head of Republic of Kalmykia, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov visited Nanjing, where he participated in the Opening Ceremony of the second Women's FIDE Grand Prix and Nanjing Pearl Spring Chess Tournament. In Nanjing Kirsan Ilyumzhinov had a working meeting with the Secretary of the Communist Party of China of the city of Nanjing, Mr. Zhu Shanlu, during which the President told about the situation of chess development in the world, the programs implemented by the FIDE and its plans for the future. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov congratulated the Chinese on the 60-year anniversary of establishment of the Republic of China and noted that these tournaments coincide with the 60-year anniversary of China. Nanjing has a long history, it was the capital. Nowadays it’s a major center of education, an intellectual center of sport, center of development of Chinese chess. The President expressed a desire to hold FIDE Congress and a major children's tournament in Nanjing, also said that Nanjing is one of the bidders to conduct 2nd Youth Olympic Games, and in this regard, the Chinese intend to develop the sport. FIDE President drew attention to the development of the program Chess in Schools. The proposal was accepted by the Chinese side. Also it was agreed to hold the World Youth U-16 Chess Olympiad in Nanjing. The Chinese side will send a delegation to Kalmykia to explore the process of introducing chess in schools and also to visit City Chess with the purpose to build the analogue city on their native land.
At the meeting were present: President of Chinese Chess Association Chu Bo; FIDE Delegation - General Secretary Ignatius Leong, Vice President Zurab Azmaiparashvili, Continental President for Europe Boris Kutin, Commercial Director Geoffrey Borg, and Assistant to the FIDE President Berik Balgabaev; the delegation from the cities-members of the Grand Slam Chess Association.
