In its recent meeting, the FIDE Presidential Board decided to promote chess by commemorating previous, deceased World Chess Champions in different events throughout the world. Starting with the first World Chess Champion, the year 2009 is dedicated to Wilhelm Steinitz, the founder of the positional chess school. FIDE calls the attention of the federations, organizers, chess players and fans all over the world to the values brought by Wilhelm Steinitz in the chess game and his indefatigable efforts to play and improve his beloved game of chess. We hope that many federations and organizers will devote efforts to commemorate Steinitz by dedicating tournaments of all categories, festivals and lessons to his memory.
