Topalov Regains Top Spot


The Elista FIDE Office is pleased to publish the 1st October 2008 FIDE Rating List which includes tournaments up to 15 September 2008 and FIDE events ending after that date such as the recent Women's World Championship in Nalchik, Russia.


Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria regained first place with a rating of 2791 in the 1st October 2008 FIDE Rating List as World Champion Viswanathan Anand fell to fifth place with 2783.


Topalov, who topped the list in 2006 but ceded first place to Anand in April 2007, won the Final Masters Bilbao Grand Slam tournament in Spain in the first half of September to gain 13.6 points. At the same tournament, Anand lost 14.8 rating points, though remaining ahead of his rival Vladimir Kramnik who fell from 3rd to 6th at 2772 after losing 15 points in the Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting.


Alexander Morozevich retained second slot at 2787 followed by Vassily Ivanchuk and Carlsen Magnus, both close behind at 2786. Magnus, consistently the top junior since January this year, climbed from sixth to fourth position in the overall ratings as he was credited with 16.10 points from last quarter's Aerosvit tournament.


Judit Polgar continued to dominate the women's ranking with a rating of 2711 even as newly crowned Women's World Champion Alexandra Kosteniuk climbed from 10th to 8th place with 2525. Hou Yifan, who lost to Kosteniuk in the Women's finals, maintained first place among the Top Girls with 2578.

Mandatory Pre-Registration of Tournaments


The FIDE Congress in Dresden is expected to institute penalties for late registration of tournaments. Please note that pre-registration of tournaments is mandatory. Rating Officers should register their event at least one month in advance on the FIDE Ratings Server. This shall assist organizers in avoiding conflicts of schedules by knowing in advance the world chess calendar. And players are assured that a FIDE-registered tournament shall be rated.

We remind Rating Officers to please upload the pgn files of the tournament to the FIDE Ratings Server.
