The Opening Ceremony of the Urals Chess Academy was held in Ekaterinburg, Russia on the 1st August 2008. The first guests of honour at the inauguration were FIDE Vice-President, Honorary President of the Russian Chess Federation Andrei Selivanov, Sverdlovsk region Governor Eduard Rossel, the President of the Sverdlovsk Chess Federation Anatoliy Sysoev.
Nearly two hundred people attended the Opening Ceremony. This is hardly surprising. At the opening of the Women Chess Championship that was held in Ekaterinburg from 19 to 30 May 2007, the FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and the Sverdlovsk region Governor Eduard Rossel put the first stone as a symbol of a future Chess Academy. Since that day everybody has been waiting for this very moment.
And despite the fact that the building had not yet finished, Academy has the ability to accommodate and educate children. Today there is a strong teaching potential already: seven Grandmasters and six International Masters, whose number will be continuously replenished. Mr. Naum Rashkovsky appointed as Director of the Chess Academy.
The Academy will search for talented kids and select the most promising athletes. In addition, the program of introduction of chess in schools will also be in the competence of the Academy. And in general, the Academy is a many-sided, multi-sports centre of intellectual development, whose goal is promotion of healthy life-style, attraction of an increasing number of children and young people to this sport and creating the conditions for the athletes to achieve the highest sporting results.
