The Head of the Republic of Kalmykia, FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov arrived on a working visit to Kazan, Russia on the 23rd of July 2008. He was met by the President of the Republic of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiev and
the mayor of the city of Kazan Ilsur Metshin at the international airport "Kazan".
On the same day the meeting of the Head of the Republic of Kalmykia, FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov with the President of the Republic of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiyev took place. The parties discussed the issues of a full-scale bilateral cooperation in various fields. FIDE President and the President of the Republic of Tatarstan have agreed upon the cooperation between FIDE and the Republic of Tatarstan, and also adopted a programme of close collaboration, which includes competitions under the auspices of FIDE, chess introduction in schools of Republic of Tatarstan as well as construction of a Chess Centre in Kazan. The mayor of Kazan Ilsut Metshin presented the Presidents the prospective construction sites for such a Chess Centre. President Shaymiev awarded FIDE President Ilyumzhinov with a Russian State Medal to commemorate the Kazan Millennium.
After the meeting, FIDE President and the President of Tatarstan, gave a brief press conference, where they replied to numerous questions from reporters. On the same day the FIDE President visited the Republic's chess club named after Mezhmetdinov, where Mr. Ilyumzhinov held a meeting with chess
public.
