The ASEAN Chess Academy (ACA), a FIDE regional training academy headquartered in Singapore, has launched a pilot program with the Kuala Lumpur Chess Association (KLCA) and Majlis Sukan Sekolah Kuala Lumpur (MSSKL) supported by the Ministry of Education Malaysia, to adopt 50 primary schools for a Chess in Schools Pilot designed around ACA's highly successful Start to Play Chess 30 lesson Scholastic Program.
Interested schools would be given school chess club membership in KLCA together with chess sets and other necesaary chess equipment, and teachers would be recruited from MSSKL with assistance from the Ministry of Education, and taught to teach chess at the level of a FIDE certified Developmental Instructor using ACA's Start to Play Chess series of books.
The objective of this program - a collaboration between training experts, local chess association, and schools - is of course to introduce more children to the game and ultimately to have chess recognised as school subject - it's really a numbers game because having more chess players means there is more awareness and publicity for the game, more money for chess, and of course a larger pool to draw talent from!
ACA is making available Start to Play Chess available to all parties involved and/or interested in Chess in Schools, with student books, certified teacher training, and schools program design, all ways which ACA can provide assistance. Enquiries may be directed to
