On Sunday, April 27th chess lost one of its greatest supporters. Nicola Palladino, born in 1932 and former President of the Italian Chess Federation, died in the city of his birth, Milan. Nicola devoted his life to chess and was very well known in FIDE circles as the Chairman of the Chess in Schools Committee for many years and as the Auditor, where he chaired the Verification Commission. Perhaps his most impressive achievement was the organisation of the World Championship Match between Anatoly Karpov and Viktor Korchnoi in Merano in 1981. In 1995 he was made an Honorary Member of FIDE in recognition of his services to chess in general and FIDE in particular. He will never be forgotten by those that knew him.
