The World Youth Chess Championships 2018 will be held in Porto Carras, Halkidiki, Greece, on the northern coast of the Aegean Sea from 19th of October (arrivals, technical meeting) to 31st of October 2018 (departures).
The Championships are held for the older age groups U14, U16 and U18, Girls and Open. The national champions of federations members of FIDE in each of the age groups are granted the free accommodation by the Organizer.
A record number of 651 participants from 79 federations will be taking part in the Championships. Among them are 8 Grandmasters, 48 International Masters and 157 FIDE Masters.
The tournament will be played using the Swiss System with 11 rounds. The national rankings will not be taken into account for pairings. The rate of play will be in accordance with the FIDE rules: 90 minutes for the first 40 moves followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an addition of 30 seconds per move starting from move one. The default time is 15 minutes.
Tie-break criteria: a) the games between the tied players (only if all tied have played each other), b) buchholz cut 1, c) buchholz, d) the greater number of games with black (unplayed games count as played with white), e) the greater number of wins.
Three best Federations, by ranking of medals collected in all categories, will receive a trophy. For first place the number of gold medals will be taken under consideration, if there is a tie, then the number of silver medals, if there is still a tie, then the number of bronze medals. If finally this is still equal, then the total points of medalists will be taken for a tiebreak.
Top three places in each tournament will be awarded with cups and medals. Places 4th to 6th with medals. All the winners will be awarded with chess gifts.
All players will be given certificates of participation.
As a prequel of the FIDE World Youth Chess Championships 2018, the 2nd FIDE World Youth U14, U16, U18 Rapid & Blitz Chess Championships are being held in the same venue from 16-20th October.
160 young players from 35 federations are currently competing in the Rapid Championships.
The tournaments are played using the Swiss System with 9 rounds. The time control for the rapid championships is 10 minutes plus 5 seconds per move increment from white’s first move. The time control for the blitz championships is be 5 minutes plus 2 seconds per move increment from white’s first move.
Tie break criteria: a) the direct game/s between the tied players (only if all tied have played each other), b) buchholz cut 1, c) buchholz, d) the greater number of games with black (unplayed games count as played with white), e) the greater number of wins.
