Andrey Filatov was re-elected President of the Russian Chess Federation with 56 votes, Ivan Starikov got 14 votes and Zaurbek Malsagov 1 vote. As it was anticipated, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov pulled out before the voting took place. Sergey Nesterov and Eduard Suboch also withdrew their candidatures.
It came as a surprise that the XIII Congress of the Russian Chess Federation encouraged also Anatoly Karpov to run for FIDE President by providing moral support both for him and Kirsan Ilyumzhinov.
