FIDE Deputy President Georgios Makropoulos had a successful three day visit to Cairo, Egypt. He met at the Egyptian Sports Ministry with Mahmoud El Helw the Deputy Minister, who responded positively to recommendations by Mr. Makropoulos and confirmed that the Ministry will increase support to chess in school programmes in Egypt. The target will be to reach seven million children in Egyptian primary schools within a few years. He also confirmed the increase of the annual budget of the Egyptian chess federation to continue its excellent work to promote chess throughout Egypt.
Dr. Hesham Elgendy president of Egyptian federation thanked Mr. Makropoulos for his great help and support to Egyptian and African chess.
Mr. Makropoulos had a meetings with several African national federations’ delegates of in Cairo as he discussed his view to promote chess in Africa by a successful chess in schools programs, creating and attracting strong clubs and organizing national federations to manage effectively projects to develop chess in Africa. Mr. Makropoulos asked Dr. Elgendy to cooperate with Mr. Aguinaldo, FIDE VP, continental president Mr. Lewis Ncube and all national chess federations to put and agree for a project of five years to develop chess in Africa.
FIDE Deputy President Georgios Makropoulos made a first symbolic move in the 7th round of the first edition of African Clubs Championship held in Cairo 24 – 31 July 2017. He attended the closing ceremony with the President of Eastern Company, sponsor of the event and shared trophies and prizes distribution with Dr. Hesham Elgendy, FIDE EB member and president of Egyptian Chess Federation and thanked Dr. Elgendy for organising this event.
Mr. Makropoulos also visited the Egyptian Museum to see works of the great Egyptian Pharaonic civilisation, which had many relations with Greek civilization and he also saw Greek statues there at the Egyptian Museum.
