China and Russia are the winners of the World Team Championships!

The World Chess Team Championships in Khanty-Mansiysk have come to a close.

Open Team Championship

This was only decided in the last round. After Round 8, the Chinese team were in the lead, with Russia trailing by one point. In the concluding round China defeated Poland 2.5 to 1.5 and became World Team Champions for the second time in a row. Russia took the Silver medals and Poland the Bronze Medals.

Women’s Team Championship

The Russian ladies had practically secured gold for themselves before the final round; all they had to do to become champions was to draw a single game against Ukraine. In fact they won 3 to 1 and so easily became Women’s World Team Champions. China took the Silver medals and Georgia the Bronze Medals.

Round 8: Team China Keeps on Leading at the World Championship before the Last Round

Russian women are one step from victory.

On June 25, the games of the last but one 8th round of the World Chess Team Championships were played in Khanty-Mansiysk.

In the men’s championship the leaders, team China, thrashed Norway 3.5 to 0.5.

In the protracted and tough battle Russia defeated team India by a hair. The winning point was supplied by Vladimir Fedoseev who had beaten Parimarjan Negi.

Poland defeated Belarus 3:1; the scorers were Radoslaw Wojtaszek and Grzegorz Gajewski.

Thanks to Alexander Moiseenko’s win, Ukraine bested team USA 2.5 to 1.5.

Turkey won against Egypt 3:1. Winning points were supplied by Mustafa Yilmaz and Vahap Sanal.

China beat Poland 3:1; scorers were Lei Tingjie and Guo Qi.

India defeated Vietnam by a close score thanks to Eesha Karavade’s win on the third board.

Match USA vs. Azerbaijan was tied.

Round7: China Grabs the Lead on World Team Championship

In the women’s tournament teams Russia and Ukraine are ahead.

On June 24, the games of the 7th Round of the World Chess Team Championships were played in Khanty-Mansiysk.

In the pivotal match of the round Russia vs. China the guest team won 2.5 to 1.5. The scorer was Li Chao who outplayed Vladimir Fedoseev on the 4th board.

Team Poland defeated Norway with the same score. Winners for Poland were Jan-Krzysztof Duda and Mateusz Bartel, Radoslaw Wojtaszek drew and Kacper Piorun lost his game.

Ukraine lost to India with a close score. Man of the day was Baskaran Adhiban who defeated Anton Korobov.

Team USA outplayed Turkey with the score 3 to 1. Winning points were supplied by Alexander Onischuk and Ray Robson.

Belarus smashed Egypt 3.5 to 0.5.

After round 7 China grabbed the lead with 12 match points. Russia trails by a step and Poland has 10 points.



In the women’s tournament Russians annihilated Poland 3.5 to 0.5. Alexandra Kosteniuk, Valentina Gunina and Aleksandra Goryachkina won their games and Ekaterina Lagno drew.

Ukraine bested Egypt 2.5 to 1.5. Winning points were supplied by Iuliya Osmak and Nataliya Buksa.

Georgia defeated Azerbaijan 3 to 1. The scorers were Nana Dzagnidze and Salome Melia.

Matches China – India and Vietnam – USA were both tied.

The leaders of the women’s tournament are the same: Russia and Ukraine have 12 match points each, but Russians are two individual points up.

Round 6: Team Russia Leads a World Championship Race

In the women’s tournament the leading pair is the same: Russia and Ukraine.

On June 23, the games of the 6th round of the World Chess Team Championships were played in Khanty-Mansiysk.

In the men’s tournament the leaders, team Russia, defeated Poland 3 to 1. Ian Nepomniachtchi and Vladimir Fedoseev scored for the winner.

China bested Ukraine 2.5 to 1.5 thanks to Ding Liren’s win over Ruslan Ponomariov on the top board.

Belarus thrashed Norway 3.5 to 0.5. Winning points were supplied by Sergey Zhigalko, Vladislav Kovalev and Alexey Fedorov.

Match India – Turkey ended in a combative draw.

USA beat Egypt 3:1.

Russia keeps leading with 11 match points, with China trailing by one step.

In the women’s competition Russia defeated India 3 to 1. Winning points were supplied by Valentina Gunina and Olga Girya.

Team Ukraine overcame Azerbaijan 2.5 to 1.5; Natalia Zhukova and Inna Gaponenko won, Iuliya Osmak drew her game and Nataliya Buksa lost.

China bested team USA 3:1 thanks to Tan Zhongyi and Lei Tingjie who had defeated their opponents.

Georgia beat Vietnam by the same score; winning points were supplied by Bela Khotenashvili and Salome Melia.

Round 5: Team Russia Spends Free Day as a Leader.

Russia and Ukraine are ahead in the women’s tournament.

On June 21, the games of the 5th round of the World Chess Team Championships were played in Khanty-Mansiysk.

In the men’s championship team Russia defeated Norway 3:1 (winners were Nikita Vitiugov and Vladimir Fedoseev).

Polish team beat Ukraine by the same score. Winning points were supplied by Radoslaw Wojtaszek and Grzegorz Gajewski.

India won their match against Egypt by a slim margin. Point-winner was Baskaran Adhiban.

All the games of the match Turkey – China ended in draws.

Another tied match was USA vs. Belarus.

After 5 rounds the leader is team Russia with 8 matchpoints. One step behind them are China and Poland.

In the women’s tournament teams Russia and USA were tied; all four games ended in draws.

Another tie took place in the match Poland vs. Ukraine. Anna Ushenina’s defeat on the first board was compensated by Nataliya Buksa’s victory on the board 4.

China smashed Georgia by the score 3.5 to 0.5.

Azerbaijan lost to Vietnam 1.5 to 2.5.

India defeated Egypt 3:1. The star of the loser team was Shrook Wafa who had won her game against Dronavalli Harika.

Round 4: Russia and China Lead a Tournament Race on the World Team Championship

Russia and Ukraine are at the top of the women’s competition table.

On June 20, the games of the 4th Round of the World Chess Team Championships were played in Khanty-Mansiysk.

In the men’s event Russia beat Belarus 3:1 (the winners were Ian Nepomniachtchi and Maksim Matlakov).

China blew out Egypt 3.5 to 0.5; Yu Yangyi, Wei Yi and Li Chao scored.

Team Turkey created another sensation: they defeated leaders from Poland by a slim margin. In the only decisive game Emre Can outplayed Mateusz Bartel.

Ukrainians beat Norway; winning points were supplied by Alexander Moiseenko and Martyn Kravtsiv.

India defeated team USA by a big score (the winners were Baskaran Adhiban, Krishnan Sasikiran and Parimarjan Negi, while Santosh Vidit drew).

After four rounds the leaders are Russia and China with 7 match points each; Turkey and Poland trail by one step.

The winner of the pivotal confrontation Georgia vs. Russia was the “home team” with the score 2.5 to 1.5. Scorers were Alexandra Kosteniuk and Ekaterina Lagno, Aleksandra Goryachkina drew and Valentina Gunina lost her game.

Round 3: Poland Leads the World Team Championship

In the women’s tournament Ukraine caught up with Russia.

On June 19, the matches of the 3rd round of the World Team Championships were played in Khanty-Mansiysk.

In the men’s tournament the leaders, team Poland, defeated Egypt three to one (the winners were Radoslaw Wojtaszek and Jan Krzisztof Duda, the other two games were drawn).

Russia won the match against Ukraine by a slim margin. The victory was supplied by Jan Nepomniachtchti, who had beaten Anton Korobov on the 2nd board.

Team India defeated Belarus 2.5:1.5. The star of the match was Baskaran Adhiban who won his game against Vladislav Kovalev.

With the same score Turkey beat Norway. The winning point was supplied by Vahap Sanal.

All the games of the match USA vs. China ended in draws.

After 3 rounds team Poland never dropped a single point. Russia and China trail by a matchpoint.

In the women’s championship Russia tied their match against Azerbaijan: Valentina Gunina’ loss on the second board had been balanced out by Olga Girya’s win on the fourth.

Team Ukraine defeated India; the scorer was Inna Gaponenko.

Match Poland – USA was also tied. The winner for Poland was Klaudia Kulon, and Sabina-Franceska Foisor scored for team USA.

China and Poland Lead in the World Championship Race

Russian team heads the table of the women’s tournament.

The second round of the Team World Championships took place in Khanty-Mansiysk on June 18.

The guest of honor of this round was the Governor of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug – Ugra Natalya Komarova who, together with FIDE Vice-President Javier Ochoa, gave a start to the women’s match between Russia and Vietnam. After that the head of the Okrug made the first symbolic move in the game Svidler – Solak (Russia vs. Turkey match).

Following that, the Governor of Ugra Natalya Komarova, President of the Russian Chess Federation, FIDE Vice-President Andrey Filatov, President of Ugra Chess Federation Vasily Filipenko and Director of the Department of Physical Culture and Sports of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug - Ugra Igor Gubkin visited the rapid chess tournament held as part of the World Championships.

In the men’s event team China defeated India 2.5 to 1.5. The scorer for the winners was Yu Yangyi.

The USA lost to Poland by a hair. The winning point was supplied by Radoslaw Wojtaszek who beat Samuel Shankland on the first board.

Norway won against Egypt 2.5 to 1.5 (Frode Urkedal and Johan Salomon won their games, Aryan Tari drew and Lars Hauge lost).

Matches Russia vs. Turkey and Belarus vs. Ukraine were both tied.

After two rounds the leaders are China and Poland. Both teams have 4 match points with Russia trailing by a point.



In the women’s tournament Russian team beat Vietnam 3:1. The winners were Valentina Gunina and Aleksandra Goryachkina.

Match Ukraine vs. China was tied: Natalia Zhukova’s loss to the World Champion Tan Zhongyi on the second board was balanced out by Inna Gaponenko’s win against Lei Tingjie on the third.

Georgia and Poland were also tied; all the games were scored.

Team India defeated the USA 2.5 to 1.5; the scorer was Tania Suchdev who beat Sabina-Francesca Foisor.

Azerbaijan zipped Egypt 4:0.

After two rounds the Russian team scored maximum number of points with Poland, India and Ukraine trailing by a match point.

Round 1 of FIDE World Chess Team Championships was played on June 17 in Khanty-Mansiysk.

A surprising result in the men’s tournament was a draw in the match Turkey vs. Ukraine. In the pivotal confrontation Russian ladies defeated team China.

The first symbolic move in the starting round of the Women’s Team Championship was made on Alexandra Kosteniuk’s behalf by the Deputy Governor of Ugra Mr. Vsevolod Koltsov. A similar “pawn face-off” in the game between Ian Nepomniachtchi and the Egyptian chess player Hesham Abdelrahman was jointly made by President of Ugra Chess Federation Vasily Filipenko and FIDE Vice-President Javier Ochoa.

In the men’s tournament team, Russia defeated Egypt 3.5 to 0.5. Scorers were Nikita Vitiugov, Maxim Matlakov and Vladimir Fedoseev; the game between Hesham and Nepomniachtchi was drawn.

Team China defeated Belarus with the same score (Yu Yangyi, Wei Yi and Li Chao won their games, and Ding Liren drew against Sergey Zhigalko).

Varuzhan Akobian’s victory on the third board helped team USA beat Norway 2.5 to 1.5.

Team Vietnam defeated Egypt four to nothing.

Match India vs. Georgia was drawn. First and fourth boards exchanged blows: Harika Dronavalli won her game against Nana Dzagnidze and Nino Batsiashvili defeated Vijayalakshmi Subbaraman.

The Opening Ceremony for FIDE Open and Women’s World Team Chess Championships took place in the capital of Ugra. For the first time in the history of chess, both events will be held at the same time and in the same place from June 16 to June 27, 2017.

Grand opening ceremony was staged in the CTC “Ugra-Classic” that is already familiar to many chessplayers.



The official part of the event was opened by Governor of Ugra Ms. Natalya Komarova. First of all, the Head of the region read out the welcome letter of the President of Russian Federation. Siding with Vladimir Putin, she shared the people of Ugra’s feelings about this event: “We host a chess tournament of this level for the first time. The integration of two championships creates fantastic good vibrations for participants, supporters and organizers. We are grateful to FIDE for this decision. I think that you are going to be surprised with our summer that is much warmer than in many European cities of our country. I hope that you will manage to surprise us, your fans, with new combinations, brilliant moves and fine play. Let the strongest win! Welcome to Ugra!”

FIDE Vice-President Boris Kutin also greeted all the teams and their supporters: “I am simply very pleased to say the words “Welcome to Khanty-Mansiysk” because I have already lost count of my visits here. This is a small city with a great heart! Khanty-Mansiysk is a number one city in the world of chess!"



President of the Russian Chess Federation, FIDE Vice-President Andrey Filatov expressed his gratitude to FIDE, Ugra and personally to Natalya Komarova: “Thank you ever so much! I agree with my colleague Mr. Kutin, for Khanty-Mansiysk is a great heart indeed. Thank you for your hospitality and all this cordiality we have already felt!” Boris Kutin pronounced main words of the night: “I declare the FIDE World Chess Team Championships open!”

A final and most expected moment of the official part was tournament pairing. Actors dressed as shamans of indigenous northern peoples in the course of their mystical dance have passed their main attributes, 10 shaman drums where the numbers were hidden, to other actors dressed as pawns. Then those souls of chess, as chess theoretician François-André Philidor used to call them, stood in line waiting to be chosen by a representative of a participating team. The number on the national musical instrument indicated the team’s position in the tournament table.

In the final part of the ceremony, the Okrug’s main theater scene was given to professional musicians and dancing groups that presented their colorful numbers.
