"Chess that Gives Freedom" Project by FIDE Social Projects Commission Print

A historic online international match between prisoners from the project "Chess that Gives Freedom" in the Municipality of Viana, Espirito Santo, Brazil, and the project in Cook County, Chicago, Illinois USA, was held on Wednesday May 17th, 2017 on the FIDE and CBX Online Platform (Chess Arena). The project in Chicago done by enthusiastic and dinamic Mikhail Korenman.

Project Manager, Alternative Programs & Education Cook County Department of Corrections and the Sheriff Thomas Dart is held in the prison complex of the American city and the Cook County Jail, which houses more than 7,000 inmates, is the largest county jail in the country began in 2012 and was carried out based on the Brazilian project "Chess that gives Freedom" after a lecturer made by the creators of the Brazilian project in which American authorities were presents.

The Project "Chess that Gives Freedom", idealized and managed by Prof. Charles Moura Netto with technical assistance of the CBX President and Chairman of FIDE Social Projects Commission GM Darcy Lima started in 2008. In 2012 won "Spirit of Sports” the International Sports Award of Best Social Project by Sportaccord representing FIDE and Chess, surpassing FIFA and IOC projects and other important sports Organizations.

The match between 4 inmates of each country ended with Chicago winning by 45 to 3.5. Accompanying the match at site in Chicago were Mikhail Korenman and Jane Gubser, Psy. D. Chief of Programs Cook County Sheriff's Office. At site in Brazil GM Darcy Lima, Prof Charles Moura Netto and Secretary of Justice of Espírito Santo Walace Tarcisio Pontes.
The match generated national and international media. The fact has generated national and international media highlighted in several types of media. We see some examples such as the Globo portal G1 webportal, TV, American websites and newspapers.
