08. Regulations for the Titles of Chess in Schools

 

 FIDE Chess in Schools Commission (CiS)

FIDE School Instructor Title

 

CiS regulates the FIDE School Instructor title.
The title is designed to be awarded to teachers who fulfil the following:

1.

Mission:

1.1.

Introducing the school student to the basic chess rules to broaden the base of chess players worldwide.

 

 

2.

Qualification - Professional Skills & Requirements: 

2.1.

Teaching or will teach in a school.

2.2.

Knowledge of psychology and pedagogy.

2.3.

Good knowledge of  chess basics.

 

 

3.

Title Award:

3.1.

By successful participation in a 15-hour CiS Seminar or by successful completion of the SI online course.

3.2.

By accepting the FIDE seminar fee of 100 euros (if required).

3.3.

By accepting the title award fee of 50 euros (which includes a licence to the end of the calendar year following the year the title is achieved).

3.4

By accepting the online examination fee of €30.

3.5.

By accepting any other participation fee.

 

 

4.

Licence:

4.1

From the end of the calendar year after the year the title is achieved, the title holder will be charged a licence fee, valid for two years, of 40 euros.

4.2

Payment of the licence fee entitles the title holder to continue receiving exclusive dedicated support in the form of:

  • updates of class materials
  • exclusive support materials (at least twice each year).

4.3.

Failing to pay the licence fee will forfeit the rights of 4.2 and the title holder will be suspended from the list of holders.

 

 

5.

Financial:

5.1.

The recommended estimated cost for Lecturers’ fees for CiS seminars is 1,750 euros for the 15-hour seminar. That amount  (1750) does not include travel expenses or board & lodging which are additional costs for the organizers.

5.2.

Various other expenses (auditorium, bulletin, coffee-breaks costs) will be the responsibility of the co-organizer.

 

 

6.

Material

6.1.

The seminar and the examination will be based on the FIDE Foundation Trainer Guide, Planet Chess and other materials recommended by the CiS Commission.

6.2.

 

The teaching subjects will be mainly:

  • Basics - Introduction to Chess:
    - the board
    - how the pieces move
    - attack, defence, capture, check, checkmate, stalemate
    - all the basic rules
  • FIDE - What is FIDE?
  • Basic Tactics, Strategy, Checkmates
  • Chess Culture
  • Mistakes - Teaching Mistakes
  • Mistakes - Children’s Mistakes
  • Literature
  • Pedagogy in relation to chess:
    - Educational Benefits of Chess
    - Teaching Methods & Class Organization
    - Piaget, Gardner & Holt
    - Differences Between Boys and Girls in Chess
  • Psychology
  • How to Organize a Chess Club & Tournament

 

 

7.

Seminar

7.1.  

A School Instructor Seminar shall be organized by a chess body (Federation, Chess Club, Chess Academy or other Chess Organization), after the submission of an application form (see Application Forms for National Chess Federations – Annex 7.1a - and Others – Annex 7.1b) to the FIDE Chess in Schools Commission and its approval.

7.2.

Seminars will be led by FIDE-CiS approved Lecturers (Annex 7.2).

7.3.

Seminars will normally occupy 3 or 5 days (3x5hr or 5x3hr), as follows:

Examination

7.4.

After the end of the Seminar the Lecturer shall send a report and the results of the examination (Annexes 7.4a, 7.4b, 7.4c) for approval to the FIDE CiS Commission. The titles achieved from the Seminar shall be approved by the FIDE Presidential Board, or Executive Board, or General Assembly, after the recommendation of the FIDE CiS Commission and will be published on the FIDE website.

7.5.

The organizer shall be invoiced for the number of participants.

 

 

8.

Seminar Evaluation

8.1.

Successful candidates will need 50 marks to pass, including not less than 50% of the marks available for the written exam paper.

8.2.

Attendance will count 0-10 marks (evaluation by the Lecturer).

8.3

Teaching experience will count 0-30 marks, counting 3 marks for each year of experience.

8.4.

Chess experience will count 0-20 marks, counting 2 marks for each year of experience.

8.5.

Exam paper will count 0-40 marks.

 

 

9.

Online Course Evaluation

9.1.

Examination for the SI title will normally be done online for individuals taking the SI course online.

9.2.

Examination for the SI title may be done online or in an exam room at the choice of a Seminar Organizer.

9.3.

Successful candidates will need 50 marks to pass, including not less than 50% of the marks available for the exam.

9.4.

 ‘Attendance’ will count 0-10 marks (evaluation by the Lecturer or Coordinator).

9.5.

Teaching experience will count 0-30 marks, counting 3 marks for each year of experience.

9.6.

Chess experience will count 0-20 marks, counting 2 marks for each year of experience.

9.7.

Exam will count 0-40 marks.
