Match of the Century: Russia versus Rest of the World Print

Moscow will host the historic chess event Russia versus the rest of the World this year.
The following Russian Grandmasters have confirmed their participation: Gary Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik, Anatoly Karpov, Alexander Khalifman, Peter Svidler, Evgeny Bareev, Alexei Dreev, Alexander Grischuk, Alexander Morozevich and Sergey Rublevsky (reserves are Vadim Zviagintsev and Alexander Motylev). Official Site of Tournament This year the Russian capital will host a remarkable event in the history of world chess. The “Match of the Century” was first officially announced by FIDE President H.E. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov at the ITAR-TASS press conference that took place on June 12, 2002 in Moscow. The conference was also attended by GM Gary Kasparov, Russian Minister of Sport Viacheslav Fetisov and President of the Russian Chess Federation Andrey Selivanov. The announced dates of the tournament are 8-12 September, 2002. The history of this match goes back to 1970 when for the first time the Soviet Union team played against the "Rest of the World" team in Belgrade.
The second match "USSR vs. Rest of the World" was held in London in 1984.
The coming match will be played over 10 boards on the Scheveningen system with Rapid Chess time control. With the strongest Grandmasters playing in the “Match of the Century”, it promises to be a very challenging and unforgettable one. Games will be played on electronic boards and broadcast live!
