Magnus Carlsen achieved his second victory of the year in the 6th edition of the Vugar Gashimov Memorial, that was held at the Heydar Aliyev Centre in Shamkir (Azerbaijan).

In great fashion, winning his last three games in a row against direct rivals like Giri, Karjakin, and Grischuk, Carlsen secured the victory with one round to spare. "I think Magnus played just amazingly well today", admitted his last victim, Alexander Grischuk.

The World Champion won five games and drew the remaining four, a result that allowed him to extend his undefeated streak to 50 games. His performances in Wijk aan Zee and Shamkir combined show a whopping 2927 performance along 2019 so far.

Ding Liren and Sergey Karjakin took second and third position respectively, two whole points behind the winner. The tournament, with a total prize fund of 100.000€, was sponsored by SOCAR, the Ministry of Youth and Sport of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Synergy Group of Companies.
