Le Quang Liem of Vietnam won the gold medal in the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games Men’s Individual Chess Championship held 21-24 September 2017 in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. Lu Shanglei of China earned the silver medal while Krishnan Sasikiran of India grabbed the bronze medal.

Le and Lu tied at 5.5 points each but the Vietnamese won the Buccholz tie break. Sasikiran finished with 5 points together with IM Mikhail Markov of Kyrgyzstan, GM Enamul Hossain of Bangladesh and GM Pouya Idani of Iran but the Indian prevailed in the Buccholz tie break. Forty four players from 23 countries competed in the 7-round Swiss system event of the multi-sport games.

Women’s World Champion Tan Zhongyi of China won the gold medal in the Women’s Individual Chess Championship alone with 6 points followed by compatriot Lei Tingjie with 5.5 points for the silver medal. Dinara Saduakassova of Kazakhstan got the bronze medal with 5 pionts and a better tie break.

Also wth 5 points each were WGM Aulia Medina Warda of Indonesia, WGM Hoang Thi Bao Tram of Vietnam, GM Zhu Chen of Qatar and IM Vijayalakshmi of India. Thirty nine players from 22 countries competed in the 7-round Swiss System championship.
